History

The CEN/CENELEC Joint Programming Committee Rail was created in the early 1990s.

The main aim was to initiate European standardization activities in view of the support to European Union directives under development such as the (at that time) draft EC directive co-ordinating the procurement procedures of entities operating in water, energy, transport and telecommunications sectors (now Directive 93/38/EEC).

In 1994, ETSI joined the programming committee which was subsequently renamed CEN/CENELEC/ETSI Joint Programming Committee (JPC) Rail.

The organization of the JPC Rail and of the JPC Rail Core was re-defined in spring 2007.
